Evaluation 9

Evaluation Task 9: Director's Commentary

Above is our director's commentary of Return of Kezia. When watching our film, we are speaking over the film, about camera shots, mise en scene, editing and sound.

Evaluation 8

Evaluation Task 8: Our Improvements for G324:

With our G321 Film opening, I generally thought we did really well as a group and manage to make our film successful, I also thought Return of Kezia was a effective horror film opening.

There is several aspects as a group of our film making we need to improve for next year.

Mise en Scene:
Starting off with the characters costumes, they were causal because of their age, but I felt like the audience didn't really know who was the antagonist and the protagonist. To improve this, we should change the costumes for each characters, making the antagonist look more dark and tense so that the audience have an idea of what they are. The protagonist should wear clothes that meet their personality which will make the film effective but also the audience will then know which characters are good and which is bad. Another thing we could improve for next year is the location of where we film. Shannon's loft was a really good idea but because it was so small, it was quite hard to film. So we now know from next time we need to think about space.

Sound:
For sound, we could improve it for next year by making the characters dialogue clearer as some parts in Return of Kezia, we couldn't really hear what they were saying as this was because of the surroundings in the background.  When we film our trailer for next year, we will make sure that when filming we check over the sound of the dialogue to see if it is clearer as this will give the audience a better look and they will be able to hear much better. Also another improvement would be adding a selection of non-diegetic sound to set the mood for each scene as this will give effect and make the audience be engaged more.

Camera:
A target as a group we have set for next year, is to include a wider range of camera angles as in Return of Kezia we mainly used camera shots. This would then get us higher marks for our trailer next year, which is what we want to aim for. When we do our trailer, we will make sure that we film the scene over again not too many times so that when we have a look over them we can see which scene will look right for our trailer.

Editing:
For editing, we know for an improvement we should add a larger or even smaller variety of cuts between different scenes, but also making sure the scenes are smooth and cut properly, making the film link and making sense for the audience. With this improvement,  the audience will then know what is happening.

Evaluation 7

Evaluation Task 7: What progress have you made since your preliminary task?

After doing our preliminary task earlier in the year, there is many things we have progressed on, such as our camerawork and editing skills. But of course there was one error we had done which was the 180 rule. However, as a group we had learnt to not break the 180  rule by switching the camera positions. When we had sorted our error, it was useful and effective as it wouldn't of confused the audience when they were watching our film.

Another thing in which we had improved since doing our preliminary task, was by adding sound to our work. When editing the preliminary task, we didn't add any non-diegetic in the background when each scene came on. This had made the task very plain and not effective for the audience. But when we edited sound on our film, Return of Kezia, it made the film tense and engaging for the audience. The soundtrack we used made our film better as it affected the mood to set in the scene.

Another thing we did which was good, was making our camera shots and angles look so much better as we wanted to use different shots and angles in different scenes we had filmed. For example to show the relationship between the characters, we used two shots in our final project, but in our preliminary task we did not use them. In Return Of Kezia, we used a lot of over the shoulder shots, this is because it was effective and it gave the effect of looking from a characters point of view. We also used a few medium shots as this showed us the facial expressions of the character and we wanted the audience to engage with the film as they would know what the character is feeling.

Here is an example of a medium shot we used in our final film. It gives the effect of the antagonist facial expressions making it tense for the audience as they are getting the first look of what Anna looks like and what she is doing.

Evaluation 6

Evaluation Task 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Image result for iphone 7

When we were filming Return of Kezia, part of the filming we used was an Iphone 7. This is because some of the scenes we had to use this equipment for the lighting of the scene. For example the end scene of our film, we had to use the torch because we were in the loft and it was a dark scenery because we didn't want it to be light as it wouldn't of been as scary. With the torch from the phone it made the scene effective because it had a little bit of light so that the audience could see the characters and what is going on.

Image result for canon eos m10

Another piece of filming equipment we used for filming, was the  Canon EOS M10. We used this technology because there was certain scene we couldn't film with the Iphone, so we used this camera for scenes such as the three main characters in the living room as we needed a long shot and also when the antagonist comes inside. As a group we felt that using this camera was much better than the Iphone because it made it clearer for the audience to see what was going on and the surroundings in each scene.

Image result for Adobe Premiere Elements 10 logo

We then had to edit our film, so it would make sense but also so that it looked like a film. What we used was Adobe Premiere Elements 10. We used this software as we did a little research before filming and knew that this was good for editing films. This editing software is effective because it has different effects to use to edit films which made Return of Kezia look like a film. One of the features we had used was a zoom feature. Reason because, when the three main characters were in the living room talking in the background you could see Anna, the antagoinst looking through the window and wanted to zoom into the window so that the audience could get a brief look of what she looked like but also it would make the film tense as the audience would be engaged more of what is happening. We used another feature which was cutting, because some of the scenes we had film didn't need to be in our film, so we would cut it and it would then make the film look like a horror rather than a bunch of mess.

Evaluation 4

Evaluation Task 4:  Who would be the audience for your media product?

Image result for teenagers

The target audience for our film is aimed out for teenagers and young adults. The reason is because the age rating for Return of Kezia is a 15. There is films out there which include action films for boys and mainly romantic comedies for girls, but for a horror it can be for both genders as in some horrors there is romance and action. Our film will conform to these teenagers film taste as Return of Kezia is a horror film. There is of course music, boys mainly listen to rap or r&b as its a stereotypical thing a male teenager would listen too, whereas girls mainly listen to pop music, girl bands and sometimes boy bands. Teenager boys have hobbies of doing sports or gaming, but teenager girls have hobbies of shopping and doing makeup with friends or groups. With Return of Kezia, as a group we felt that we had attracted our target audience by what our protagonist are like in the film which are stereotypical teenagers.

Stereotypical teenagers are mainly sociable and love to hang out with a group of people, this is good because they may want to watch Return of Kezia together as a group. This is normal thing for teenagers to do as they might enjoy the film more with friends rather than alone. Teenagers would also watch our film because they like watching horrors but this genre is a popular one as mainly teenagers are interested.

Evaluation Activity 1

Evaluation Activity 1: In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is a medium shot of the protagonist in the film, which are Baily and Sean. This shot is effective because the audience have a idea of what the characters look like but also seeing the scenery of where the film is being set. It is also effective because we can see what they are wearing and seeing their facial expressions as they are walking down the road.

This is an over the shoulder shot of the two characters, Baily and Sean. This shot is effective because as the audience, we can see what the two characters are wearing but also the actions they are using when walking up to the door. It is also effective because we can see the body language of the two boys, telling the audience that they are calm and ready for the start of the day.
This is a long shot of the three main characters having a conversation. This shot is effective because we can see what the characters are doing and how their body language is being used. It is also effective because we can see the  antagonist in the background who is Anna and she is looking through the window staring at the three main characters. This makes the audience engage more into the film because they want to know what Anna is doing.
This is a close up shot of the antagonist (Anna) staring through the window outside. This is effective because this shot is showing what Anna looks like and what her facial expressions are doing. For example we can see on her face is that she is smiling creepily to make the audience a little scared. It is also effective because with Anna staring through the window, the audience now know who she is staring out
This is a medium shot of the antagonist again as this time she is walking into the house as Shannon one of the main characters is concerned about Anna because she was staring through the window rather than knocking on the door. This shot is effective because it is showing Anna walking through the door and what the surroundings are, but also the audience are getting a first look of what she looks like and we can see that she is wearing dark clothing showing she is the antagonist. The audience can also see her facial expressions which is her smiling because she is trying to act natural as Anna has been outside for a while, making the audience engage more.
This is a long shot of the Shannon one of the main characters and the antagonist who is Anna. This is effective because in this shot we can see that Shannon is going into the loft, but Anna is at the bottom of the loft stairs looking up at Shannon but it is showing us that Shannon doesn't know Anna is there. This is effective because the audience are seeing a dark side of Anna that they haven't seen before and are getting engaged of what she is going to do.
This is a another close up shot of Anna showing Shannon and the camera a photo of a family of four. This is effective because the camera is focusing on a photo of a family which is linked to the film
This it effective because it show the title of the film in a clear frame and the is the last frame in the film.

Evaluation 5

Evaluation Task 5: How did we attract our audience?

With this video, is our annotated evaluation of our final film project Return of Kezia.

Evaluation 3

Evaluation Task 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media project and why?

Final Film Production.

This is the production company for are film Return of Kezia. Another example would be Lionsgate they have brought out lots of popular films like Saw and the Exorcism. Films like ours have a small budget and are often more popular with an younger audience which don't often have that much money to go to places like the Odeon so they like to go to online servers like Netflix which has a monthly price of £7.99 and has thousands of films on there. Our film is an low risk film on online distributors because it is a low budget film which is an low risk for investing in.

We made are production titles on adobe firework where we chose the black background so that when we added the text, it was clear to see. The text we used was a creamy light colour so it would stand out on the black background. When we chose our logo, we wanted it to be a little different to others. Next to the production title is a small circle with the sandstone colour, what the circle is, a small camera lens because we are making a film and we decided to use the circle to show the camera lens and the colour sandstone to make the audience understand what the production title and logo meant.

Evaluation Activity 2

Character Analysis:

With the character i have chosen Anna who is Kezia in the film, Anna is similar to the antagonist from the film from the woman in black, we can see that the woman is wearing a dark clothing and so is Anna as she wearing a black hoodie and dark bottoms and both have something that is covering there heads, another similarity is that they are both possessed and they are looking to kill people that haven't done anything wrong

Final Age Rating

Final Age Rating

Return of Kezia age rating is now a 15. This is because some scenes can be jumpy then most scenes which can give the audience a fright. But also some bad language is being used in some scenes as the characters are showing their emotions towards the other characters. We chose it to be a 15 because mostly teenagers around 15-18 would watch horrors and this type of film would be attracted to them.

Final Film Production Title

Final Film Production Title

This is the final film production for our film "Return of Kezia", this will be at the start of our film making it effective for the audience before the film starts. We deigned this on adobe premiere elements 10, the same software we used to edit our film. We thought that creating the production title on adobe would be better than Photoshop because we could add effects in to see which would work to go into our film within the opening seconds before a scene starts. The name SandStone Films is a good production title because it is different to any other and it isn't basic for example it isn't called "Horror House Films" which is pretty cliche because that is what most horrors would have.

Our final 2 minute opening scene

Return of Kezia

This is the final two minute of our film called, Return of Kezia.

Costume/Characters Profile

Costume/Characters Profile

Shannon: Shannon is wearing casual clothing of a grey crop top, black leggings and a heart shape necklace. In most horrors, people in the film are wearing casual clothing because it would look more normal than people wearing smart clothing like a suit or a dress. Shannon is the victim of the film who invites her friends round to meet her best friend Anna who they really aren't sure about. Being the victim, Shannon is very outgoing and can be sarcastic and funny.

Sean: Sean is wearing casual clothing as well, what he is wearing is a Nike jumper, with blue jeans which is very casual but most boys mainly wear these types of clothes. Sean is the one of the protagonist in the film along with his friend Baily who is also Shannon's friend as well. In the film Sean is very chatty because he seems nervous about meeting Shannon's best friend Anna.

Anna: Anna is also wearing causal clothing, which is a black jumper and black jeans, making the character look quite quiet which is good because in most horrors there is normally a quiet person. In the film, Anna is the Antagonist, she is very quiet and doesn't speak to the characters much in the film, which will make the audience more engaged in the film because of how she is acting toward the others.

Baily: Baily is wearing smart casual, which is grey chinos, checkered shirt and a black jacket. This makes him look like the mature one out of the group. In the film, Baily is the other protagonist joining with Sean his best friend. Baily is quite a joker in the film as he jokes around with Sean about Anna being his next girlfriend, but at time he can be serious.

Soundtrack Research 2

Soundtrack Research 2

Doing more research for music for our film, we then found this soundtrack which had more tension to it and will make the film look like a horror. This piece of music is called "Anxiety" and is also composed by Kevin MacLeod.

Soundtrack Research 1

Soundtrack Research 1

When looking for some music to make the film effective and tense for the audience, we wanted something that was different and unique, instead of having something basic. I was researching different kinds of music and couldn't find one that could go with our film. Baily had actually found this video and told the group about it and we had a listen and it was really good and we decided to add this to our research, just in case we found something better.

Knowing how to use Adobe Premier Elements 10.

How to use Adobe Premier Elements 10

When researching how to edit the first two minutes of our film, I came across adobe premiere elements 10 which is a really good way of editing and making sure the film looks good as it can get. When I found this video of how to use it, it helped me a lot because I was more confident of how to edit and add in different effects.

With this video, I am now ready to edit more than just adding effects.

Animatic story board

With these animatic story board, it is showing you a brief idea of what our film is going to look like, as a group we had made this video to give the audience an idea of what could possibly happen in our film but also showing how we had to do drawings for each scene with dialogue and camera shots and how long each scene is going to be.

Description of film

Opening Scene Description:

Our film starts with Baily and sean, two of the films protagonists walking down the road on their way to meeting me, the other protagonist of the film, as well as her friend Anna, who turns out to be the antagonist of the film. The two boys are worried about meeting her as they don't know what she will be like.

When they arrive at my house, they find out that Anna isn't there so the boys ask me what Anna is like. Although the two girls have been friends for a long time, i warns the boys that Anna is quite weird and creepy, which worries them. While this is happening, Anna arrives at mine but instead of knocking on the door, she is seen staring through the window and watching the TV, which confuses the rest of the group. When i open the door to Anna, she says that she was watching the TV.

When Anna walks into the living room, she doesn't speak to anyone and everyone is unsure on what to do. i has a suggestion of going up to the loft to get a game for everyone to play, which everyone agrees to do. Strangely, Anna gets up and follows me upstairs, which she doesn't know about. When the two girls meet in the loft, i look around for a game that everyone can play. Meanwhile, Anna finds an old scrunched up photo lying around and she says that she recognises it. i think she's being silly, so she pretends to rip the photo up. Anna responds angrily to this and she attacks me, who screams when she sees her going for her. The boys downstairs are left confused, and Anna turns to the camera in a creepy and menacing way.

Script for our film

Script for Return of Kezia:

Baily and Sean are walking down the road, having a conversation.
Baily: You might want to text Shannon to say that we’re going to be a bit late. Ok let’s go.
Sean: I’m not sure what this Anna girl is going to be like.
Baily: Yeah, I know.
Baily and Sean arrive at Shannon’s house.
Sean: I really hope she’s not weird.
Baily: So do I, she’ll probably be your girlfriend mate.
Sean: Oh shut up!
Baily knocks on the door.
Baily: It’ll probably take Shannon an hour to answer.
Shannon answers the door.
Shannon: Hey guys!
Baily: You alright?
Shannon: Yeah, you?
Baily: Yeah not bad, is Sean’s girlfriend here yet? (Laughs)
Sean: Funny.
Shannon: No, she’s going to be late. She’s a little bit weird though,
Baily: That’s a little bit harsh.
Shannon: Does anyone want a drink? (Walks into the kitchen)
Baily: Nah, I’m alright thanks.
Sean: I’m really worried about how this Anna girl’s going to be.
Baily: You’ve got me and Shannon here, it will be good.
Shannon: (Returns from the kitchen) It’ll be fine, I’ve known her for years.
Baily: There you go, it will be cool.
Sean: Well what sort of personality has she got?
Shannon: Honest?
Sean: Of course.
Shannon: She’s a little bit weird and creepy, I’m not even joking.
Sean: Well that’s promising.
Baily: Well why are you friends with her, what are you doing?
Shannon: I feel so sorry for her. Sean what’s wrong?
Sean: (Pointing towards Anna who is at the window) Who’s that?
Shannon: Oh, that’s Anna.
Baily: What’s she outside for? There’s something wrong with her if she’s looking through the window.
Shannon: (Opening the front door to Anna) Anna? What are you doing?
Anna: Just watching the TV, you know.
Shannon: Well you could have knocked on the door. Come in.
Anna: Ok
Shannon: Guys, this is Anna.
Baily and Sean: Hi, you alright.
Shannon: Anna, this is Baily and this is Sean.
Baily: You alright.
Shannon: You can sit down if you want.
Sean: (Picks up Pillow) I’ll get this.
Shannon: Have you got any ideas for what we should do?
Anna does not answer.
Baily: So Anna what do you feel like doing?
Shannon goes up to the loft to get a game for the characters to play.
Soon after Shannon goes upstairs, Anna gets up and follows her, without saying anything to anyone.
Shannon: (After noticing Anna) You alright Anna?

Cuts to Baily and Sean downstairs.
Sean: You know Anna, don’t you find her so weird.
Baily: She’s a bit odd and I don’t know where the fuck she’s gone.
Sean:  She wasn’t talking, she didn’t even look at me.
Baily: I don’t think you’re in their to be fair mate. (Laughs)
Sean: I’m not surprised.
The girls are up in the loft.
Shannon: I’m just going to get a board game, you do whatever you want.
Main lights in loft turn off.
Shannon: Did you just turn the lights off?
Anna: No
Anna picks up an old scrunched up photo.
Anna: Why do I recognise this photo?
Shannon: What do you mean “recognise this photo?”
Anna: I recognise it.
Shannon: It’s just a photo of an old family. I’ll just rip it.
Anna: (Angry at what Shannon did) What do you think you’re doing?
Shannon: It’s a photo, calm down.
Anna: Well I recognise it. Like what do you think you’re doing?
Anna goes to attack Shannon. Shannon screams. Anna turns to the camera.

Tea dye effect for family picture

How to tea dye a picture/paper.

By doing some more research for making the family photo more effective, I looked up how to make it have a tea dye effect  because with one picture it had a burning effect but it didn't go to plan so we decided to make it have an old effect by using tea dye. With this video, it is showing me how to properly to tea dye some paper and it will actually make the picture old and been away for a long time.

Burning effect for family picture

How to get Burning effect for a picture.

By doing a little research, I manage to find a video to help me make a picture have a burning effect because we wanted to make it look very destroyed as it would give something to the audience to think about while watching the film. But also we had two ideas of making the picture less plain, one with the burning effect and one with it looking old. With this video, it can help get the picture the way I would like it which is great.

Story Board

This is the story board that as a group we had made. We made the story board because we needed to plan out what our film was going to look like before filming it, and we had added in camera shots we would use, what sound would be playing in the background around certain scenes, but also adding the dialogue because in films the characters need to be talking. When we made the story board, it really helped us out when we had started to film because we knew exactly what camera angles and shots to use, but also we knew what scenes we were filming. This story board also gives the audience an idea of what the film is going to look like.

Opening Titles planning practice

In this short video, there is different styles and effects that we thought would be good for our film title. There is also different types of film titles we have named, this is because we had a questionnaire of different name titles as we couldn't decided what to call our film. With the name titles we added different fonts and effects to them so it would make it effective for the film but also when the film titles come up during the film, the audience will be engaged with the film as of the name title looking good. There is many different types of ways we can have our film title like and as a group we will decided which one is best for our film.

Research and Planning Targets

In order to have completed this stage of your journey you need to evidence time-management, storyboarding, scripting and include further video diaries of production and post-production.  A very strong response so far.

Questionnaire

Questionnaire
Here we have is the questionnaire that I have made for to me to ask around to see what best suits for our film. For example, What is the better title? Either Return of Kezia, Curse of Kezia or Kezia, Kezia, Keiza, and people may vote for Return of Kezia more than Curse of Kezia. With this questionnaire, it is really going to help what we can do to our film because of each persons feedback of each question.

Props - Picture

Props - Picture

In this photo, it is showing what we are using to make the picture effective. We started off by burning the photo to see what it would look like because we wanted to burn a little of it to make it look like it is very old and just been found somewhere unknown. But when we did this, it didn't work as we thought it would, because actually it burnt the whole thing!

In this photo, it is showing you what it the picture looked like after burning parts of it, but as you can see the picture burnt more than unexpected it actually burnt the main part of the picture we needed, so we did a different idea for the picture because we printed off two of the same pictures.

In this photo, you can see that the picture is stained to make it look old and out dated. By doing this, we used a tea bag to make it that colour, with the tea bag going into the water and squeezing the tea out the bag over onto the picture to make it change colour. Once we had done this, we let the picture dry and this is what it turned out to look like, which is what we wanted.

With this prop, we will be using this in our film because it is the main prop of the film because the little girl in the photo is the main part of the plot.

Mood Board of Film

Mood Board of Film

With this mood board it is showing you what could or be in our film, such as the location idea, the loft, we have a picture of a loft to show that this is where we will be filming for our film. So by looking at this mood board, you will have an idea of what is going to be in our film.

Final Film Location - Shannon's House/Loft

Final Film Location - Shannon's House/Loft

For our final location for filming, we have decided as a group that Shannon's house/loft is where we will be filming "Return of Kezia" as this will make the film effective as the location is an old cottage and makes it more tense and uplifting for the audience and film.

3 ideas for our film

3 Ideas for our film

With these three photos, you can see there is different 3 ideas we could use for our filming, so such as the plot there is three of them because we needed to have few ideas of what we could have in our film, but also so that our group could make a final decision of what our plot should be.

Actor Interviews

Actor Interviews

In this video, Me, Anna, Baily and Sean are being interviewed to see if we can be part of "Return of Kezia" In this video each of us are asking different questions for our film, which is making it effective as then the audience watching this video know who is going to be in our film.

Title ideas

Title Ideas

In this video, it is showing you title ideas of what our film should be called and different transitions which will make it effective. By having different title ideas, this makes it effective to us but also the audience.

Weather Check

Weather Check for Filming

For filming, we have checked what the weather could be like just in case we had to film outside. By looking for the weather, we have an idea of what day to film as what the weather looks like in the screenshot below.

Target Audience - 15

Target Audience - 15

For our film "Return of Kezia", we have decided that our target audience will be a 15. This is because we are filming a horror and most horrors are 15. The reason why our target audience is a 15 is also because most teenagers around this age watch these kind of films, but also there is some bad language to be used in our film because of what is happening in the film but also again our target audience is a 15 because we think we will get more views towards our film.

Film Production Name Ideas

Film Production Name Ideas

For every film that has been made, each company will have a film production at the start of the film, to make it more effective for the audience. I have been researching online for some film production name ideas for our film "Return of Kezia". Here is a few examples of the name ideas.

Looking Glass StudiosSpinning Wheel Studios
Continuum FilmsGreen Fuzz Productions
Off the Spectrum ProductionsFly on the Wall Films
Pendulum Film CompanySweet Kiss Studios
Sandstone FilmsOffspring Entertainment

With these Film Production name ideas, I might ask people to see what they think of each one and which one will suit for our film. There is a few name ideas i like which are Looking Glass Studios and Offspring Entertainment because these two  seem very effective.

Location Idea 3 - Ashtead Common

Location Idea 3 - Ashtead Common

In this video,it is showing Anna filming one more idea for filming, which is located in Ashtead Common. Anna is saying what we could do with this location for our film and how effective it is if this was to be our filming location.

Location Idea 2 - River Mole

Location Idea 2 - River Mole

In this video, me and Anna have filmed another location idea down by the River Mole in Leatherhead. We talk about what we could do with this location for our film, as by the river we know it could be effective of how it looks like when its day time and night time. The River Mole is a good idea for filming because of a lot of space, we could use a lot of the green area, but we still have one more idea for filming because we are not 100% sure where our film should be located, that is why we will make a questionnaire asking people where our film should be located.

Location Idea 1 - Shannon's Loft

Location Idea 1

In this video that your about to watch, it is telling you the first location me and Anna have in our head to use for filming our opening two minute of our horror. In this video it is showing that we are in my loft in my house and this is one the film locations we have decided as an idea. The loft is medium size loft, which gives us some space for our filming, the loft is effective because in most horror films a loft is normally being used, we will use a questionnaire to find out if this should be our filming location.
